I haven't done my taxes yet. I have never waited this long to do them. The IRS is estimating the net tax gap (the amount owed in taxes) to be $300B this year. Maybe they won't notice if I don't send my 1040 in? Probably not.I usually have to pay money every year, even with the child credits, mortgage, charity, etc. I'm not looking forward to stroking a fat check with no income. I always feel like I am missing out on some secret deduction. I fill out all the boxes in TurboTax only to get the message "Sorry, your $4,500 in bulkpack purchases doesn't exceed 7% adjusted gross income."
I am all for a simpler tax code. I don't like a flat tax, but we could definitely make things more simple. I think the main reason that U.S. tax codes are so complex is that income is inherently complex. I doubt we will ever get to the postcard sized return, but I wouldn't be surprised if the U.S. moved more toward a consumption-focused tax code.
